Time to be Thankful...

Angela (my teenage niece) and I went to see The Blind Side today, as our Thanksgiving Girls Day Out treat to ourselves. I was off of work today, so I picked her up after school and decided to take her shopping, to California Pizza Kitchen, and, of course, to the movies. One of the movies that was on our must-see list was The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw (who is the sexiest man in country music, hands down. Faith Hill...get it, girl!)

The Blind Side is beyond inspirational and moving, and anyone with a heart will be touched in one way or another by the film. And though I loved Sandra's performance, and her character in the movie, one thing's for sure: whoever dressed her, picked a phenomenal watch to grace her tiny little wrists.

I've been lusting after this wrist watch for months: it is exactly what I'd like to wear to keep track of time, as it seems I need far more practice in this department, since I am eternally running late.

It is the object of my affection, and it's yours for the taking if you want to fork over $225. Which, in the larger scheme of things, is a small price to pay for a gorgeous new wrist watch. It's by Michael Kors, and is available at all Nordstrom stores and online at www.nordstrom.com.

Although after seeing what Michael Oher went through prior to finding this amazing family who helped transform his life (and he, theirs) you may put your priorities in order, and find yourself, as I did, grateful for what you already have...not only in your closet or jewelry box, but in your home, in the people you love, your friends, family, and most importantly, right inside your own heart.

That's something to be thankful for.

Lots of Pretty from The City

Whitney, I'm loving the fact that you're branching out on your own and starting your own line...not only do I usually love what you're wearing (there have been the occassional slip-ups in your fashion history, but hey, we've all been there once or twice) but I also love that you're actually a nice girl. And you were on The Hills, and The City. Which seems like a virtual miracle, considering most of the girls on those shows? Are either crybabies, or bitches.

To check out Whit's new line for yourself, visit her website: www.whitneyeve.com, and also, keep an eye out at Nordstrom locations, because I spotted a few pieces from her collection at Nordie's the other day and actually loved them, which is surprising, since I usually don't like clothing made my celebs. Whitney, again, you beat the odds, girlfriend.

Now if only you would someday stand up to Kelly Cutrone, and bitch slap her across the face when she goes all PMS on everyone.

That? Would be amazing.

Hot New Gossip

The first time I ever watched the CW's Gossip Girl, I remember taking out my little notebook from my handbag and jotting down all the things I was inspired to buy after watching Blair, Chuck, and the gang duel it out in their private schools and penthouses.

Although I must admit to being a big fan of Blair (why is it, exactly, that I always root for the mean girl on every show?) I am a fan of Serena van der Woodsen's style and flair for prep meets bohemian. If I was compiling a list of what to buy, I'd take more cues from Serena than Blair. And since I just purchased not one, but two menswear blazer's like this one, I can take inspiration as to how to style it from Ms. van der Woodsen herself.

As for those of you who are followers of the show, fashion is about the only thing Serena and I could talk about. I have no qualms about telling you what a whorebag I think she's been this season, and how completely disappointed I am in her character's choices. When Blair is less shady than you are, Serena...you got some issues, girl.

Buy your own sleek and chic menswear oversize blazers at Nordstrom, where I bought mine, Charlotte Russe (I bought an adorable one for $4.99 the other day) or Express stores nationwide.

Evenings of Glamour

Some of my favorite memories from my childhood are the evenings when I would stay home with a sitter (usually my big brother & his girlfriend, who is now his wife) watching movies I probably was too young to be watching (and everyone wonders why I use filthy language) while I waited patiently for my parents to get home from the dances they had gone to.

My Mom belonged to a women's social club, and so there were balls and dances that they'd get dressed up to go to. I would watch my Mom get ready, sitting by her vanity and looking up at the big, long mirror as I watched her apply a darker shade of lipstick than I was used to seeing on her; I watched as she added an extra coat of mascara. She'd slip on high heels, and a pretty dress, threw lipstick, mints, and powder in her clutch, and after giving me a kiss, she was out the door with my Dad.

I remember she'd always tell me one day, I'd grow up and be able to do the same thing. She'd say, "This is the closest I'll ever get to being like a star, but you, you'll be able to experience even more." I dreamed all my childhood that I'd be able to get ready for awards shows and prep for the red carpet, but fast forward 22 years or so (give or take) and my life is far from glamorous; in fact, I think my parents had more fun at my age, and they were parents. As I write this, I am wearing little boyshorts from Victoria's Secret PINK collection, an American Apparel tank top and jeweled sandals (don't ask, I can't even explain my wardrobe choice, except that I can blog from home, praise God.)

One of the things I remember most is trying on the amazing pair of heels my Mom would always buy to go with her dresses. These reminded me so much of a pair my Mom wore once, with a black cocktail dress and pretty earrings and a silver clutch.

I still love the excitement and thrill of being able to get dressed up...but I'll always look back on those memories of being a little girl with skinny legs and tiny little feet, slipping on a pretty pair of heels...with stars in her eyes, of course.

And on most days, (minus the skinny legs and tiny feet) inside...

I'm still that little girl.

Find these heels, and a plethora of other choices, at Nordstrom stores nationwide or online at www.nordstrom.com. These babies will cost ya about $230, but keep in mind...the Half Yearly Sale is on at Nordie's, and I'm sure the selection is the best in town. Check it out for yourself today, and keep those stars in your eyes.

Well Hello-ooo, Dollface

As a teenager, and even during college, everyone would compliment my skin. I remember a guy named Jerry I went to school with, a good friend of mine, telling me that I had “skin like a doll.” In other words, it was porcelain: I never got blemishes, and when I did, I would freak out because I had one tiny pimple, usually when it was that time of the month.

When I turned 27 this past year, my skin went haywire. I don’t know exactly what is to blame for my breakouts; it could be my hormones, it is VERY likely all the stress in my career and professional life; and it might just be a change in my body’s chemistry. Or maybe it’s payback for always having flawless skin when I was younger. I have tried literally everything to get rid of the blemishes, short of laser therapy or microdermabrasion. Since I really don’t’ want to do anything too invasive, I’ve been very cautious about what I use on my skin.

My Aunt Patsy, ever the Oprah fan, recommended Mario Badescu to me a few months ago, because it was one of “Oprah’s Favorite Things.” Well, hell, if it worked for Oprah, it has to work for me, I thought. (Honestly, that’s not exactly what I thought, but at that point, I was willing to try anything to improve my skin.)

I bought the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion at Ulta, knowing this was great, because previously, you had to order the products online or hope to find it at Nordstrom. Mario Badescu is not sold mainstream: you can’t run to Walgreen’s or Rite-Aid or Long’s and go purchase it on a shelf.

Lo and behold, after a few nights of using the drying lotion, my blemishes started to heal. My skin started to improve. And even though I experience the occasional breakout even now, I know my skin’s on the way to recovery, and I’ll be a devoted Badescu follower from here on out. Soon enough, hopefully, my skin will look like that of a porcelain doll…once again.

To find Mario Badescu’s products, visit your local Ulta store, or the website: www.mariobadescu.com, or your local Nordstrom, or online at www.nordstrom.com

The Reality of It All...

I'm not exactly big on celebrities who start their own fashion lines, but considering this particular celebutante has stolen hearts on TV since her teenage years in Laguna Beach, and seeing as how she attended FIDM with the likes of Stephanie Pratt and other alumni, like my good friend Brooke, I figure she has a little more credibility as a designer.

Lauren was always my favorite on The Hills; not only was she my favorite reality star on the show, she was also the best dresser, in my opinion, anyway. From comfy maxi dresses to flannels with skinny jeans, Lauren knew how to put herself together, especially as she got more and more immersed in the fashion industry.

I was so excited the first time I saw her pieces at Nordstrom and other luxury retailers, but the price tag was admittedly a little steep considering the easy designs and simplistic pieces she was designing. Now that she's got a new line out at Kohl's, I feel like the price is not only right, but it's also pretty, fresh, and very LC...both Lauren Conrad, & yours truly. ;)

Pick up the pieces yourself today at your nearest Kohl's store, or shop online at www.kohls.com. Bring a little bit of Hollywood into your closet today.

Nothing But A T-Shirt On (Well, not exactly.)

I love comfy tees; I remember wearing oversize Hanes T-Shirts with cutoff shorts and flip flops in the 7th & 8th grade, when I wasn't as interested in high heels and mini skirts (as I was in my high school days.) I remember one of my cousins telling me "There's no way you will ever be a fashion designer or get into any kind of fashion school looking that way. You look like a slob. You don't even look middle class. You are straight street."

I laugh at him now, because he isn't even middle class. In fact, if this were a caste system, he would not be fit to scrub the feet of peasants.

Truth be told, I wore them because my body was changing and developing in my junior high days; I was struggling to accept the fact that I now had to wear a bra and that I had curves I didn't know what to do with. Some of my friends still had boyish bodies with no butts and no breasts; this was prior to Jennifer Lopez hitting the big screen and making my life wayyy easier. (This is why she will be one of my role models until the day I die.)

The cost factor was miniscule. My Mother loved it. She would buy me t-shirts at Target that cost less than my lunch money for a day of school, and I would try and glam them up with a cute necklace, throw on the same tattered pair of shorts that always seemed to fit and feel comfortable, and a pair of flip flops. Sometimes I'd wear Adidas with ankle socks (and at that time, that wasn't really in style. I wore them, anyway. They made my legs look longer.)

I still believe in wearing what makes you feel good. Eventually I became comfortable and secure in my body. I learned that having an ass and thick thighs isn't always such a bad thing (and ask the gentlemen, ladies, they do not object to looking at strong, thick, svelte legs-especially when they are bronzed, with a skirt brushing against them. I still believe some fashion staples can cost the same as a Happy Meal, and can carry you from runway to work to a night out on the town. I still believe that to look good, you have to feel good about yourself--and if it means only wearing a Hanes t-shirt and sandals, then so be it.

Hilary Duff is spot-on as usual, having jazzed up her shirt with a very ethnic looking necklace that is just gorgeous, and even though she herself is quite young, she is not any less fashionable. In fact, I would venture to say she is the most chic of the week, at least in my book. Go Hilary. It's your birthday. What is it? 19? 20? Whatever it may be, do your thing girl. Even if the top only costs $3.99.

For tops like Hilary's, at a fraction of the cost, hit up Forever 21, H&M, www.topshop.com, or Nordstrom, where I found comfy tees on sale, 2 for $20.

Lady in Leather

Ashley Tisdale is not #1 on my fashion radar; she's not the celebrity whose look is most closely similar to mine, but I will say that after seeing this photo of her in a few fashion mags and gossip rags, she is growing up into a little fashion plate, and I loved her leather jacket mixed with a comfy tee, topped off with an adorable little newsboy hat in tweed. This is a great transitional look for Fall and a terrific way to continue rocking the tanks and jeans while staying a little warm in the Fall.

I found great leather jackets on sale at Nordstrom over the weekend (yes, they are already making their debut in stores in Arizona, where the weather is still very warm outside) and at Express, as well. You can easily find an adorable jacket for under $100...and this is a look that will definitely take you through Fall in style.

LC's Christmas Wish List...Starts Now.

Numero Uno on my Christmas Wish List?

World Peace. Duh.

But since that shit is probably not going to happen, why waste a wish on something unrealistic? If I’m going to wish for something unrealistic, I’d rather waste my wish on things like a new Chloe bag, or dresses from Diane von Furstenberg, or a Cartier tank watch.

But this is one of those items that makes my wish list, even if I know I might not get it.

Every time I walk into Nordstrom’s, third floor, right by Nordstrom Café and across from Brass Plum, I glance over at the home section where I always stare longingly at this gorgeous satin robe that’s lined with the most incredible fur I’ve ever felt in my life; so soft and sensual, I can imagine my freshly bathed and moisturized body slipping right into it while I do my hair in the mirror of my vanity, or apply my makeup in the mornings. It is luxurious and beautiful and I want it, Santa Claus, damn it!

But since I am no longer a little girl who writes hopeful letters to the man up North, I guess I’ll just have to save lots and lots of loose change and hope for the day when I can bring that robe home, and slip it on the body that was meant to feel such extravagance.

(Yeah, I’m talking about me, Santa, I can’t help it if I’m a little selfish, you never gave me a baby sister when I asked for one 24 years ago in preschool, and I’m used to getting the spotlight. You also haven’t brought me babies of my own—though maybe I should be thanking you for that—and so I have no one else to worry about except myself.)

Who knows what the holidays will hold in store for me…this year, I think someone to kiss under the mistletoe might be a more worthwhile present to ask for than a robe that costs $265.00. But it never hurts to ask, right?

To find this robe, check out Nordstrom online: www.nordstrom.com (the link is also on my blog page.) It is made by a line called 'Giraffe' and the fur lining is incredible.

Rockin' That Thing...

If there's one thing most women are picky about, it's usually jeans. Buy the wrong pair, and you end up looking like you've got on a horrendous pair of "mom jeans" or a disgusting display of camel toe. If you don't try them on, chances are, you'll wind up with a muffin top, which is nothing nice for anybody to see; in fact, I will go out on a limb to make a public service announcement: ladies, muffins belong in a bakery, they do not belong hanging out the waistband of your jeans. Thank you for your time.

Jeans are very difficult for me to find and purchase, because I am so particular. I have always had a big, curvy ass and no matter if I was a size 2 or a size 8, through the years, it's been a challenge to buy jeans. Right now, I am fluctuating between a size 4 and a size 6 (so, a size 26 or 27 in denim sizes) and they're still hard to shop for, and I'm sure just as I find a great pair, I'll lose more weight and have to get a whole new size again. The girls in my family seem to have no problem: they not only are able to glide right into the jeans, they also fit perfectly in length. I stand 5'2 in my bare feet and if I am not wearing heels, I am pretty short. Jeans usually fit me just fine in the butt (when I find the ones that fit my ass) and are loose in the waist, because my waistline happens to be more defined now, especially lately (shout outs to Globe Gym!) and fit just right in my legs but are looong on the bottom, which leads me no choice but to either alter them, cuff them, or wear 4" heels.

The one brand that has never done me wrong, the brand I always run back to and am a loyal follower of happens to be Rock & Republic. Now, I am a fan of Victoria Beckhams' style; I know many of you out there may dislike the skinny little darling, but I think she dresses impeccably most of the time. She designed a line for the brand, and I had to have the jeans; they have a crown on my ass, which I felt was appropriate, since my family and friends refer to me affectionately as the Princess.

Not only that, but those jeans are my "hey baby" jeans. Everytime I wear them, at least one guy will walk by and say "hey baby" and even though I generally don't pay attention to the comments, I am glad that my jeans fit the way they should.

Today April & I decided that, in order to live better lives, we needed to come up with a business plan soon and start our own company. And we decided when we have our own empire, we will run it in cute outfits, complete with jeans and heels. Because if you can't run an empire in jeans, that job really isn't our cup of tea. The right pair of jeans is like your BFF: when you find the right brand, you hang on to the ones that just fit you best and match your style, because they're certainly hard to come by.

Rock and Republic can be found at select Nordstrom stores, boutiques throughout the country, but your best bet may just be to order them online at www.revolveclothing.com/b/rockandrepublic, for the Rock and Republic online boutique on Revolve Clothing's website. Get yours today, because even us ladies with a little junk in our trunk can rock these babies like no other. ;)

The Age of Innocence

I was having a lovely little lunch at Nordstrom Cafe at Scottsdale Fashion Square about two Saturdays ago. For those who don't know, this is customary for me; I love to treat myself to the Mixed Berries & Greens Salad and a glass of red wine; its a well deserved and much appreciated afternoon lunch that's healthy, light, and delish. (Nordstrom has to be one of my favorite places for this reason. I can go to the spa, hit up the best makeup counters, shop 3 levels of apparel nirvana, and still stop and have a nutritious meal and a glass of wine under one roof. Whoever invented the concept? Is seriousy my long lost twin sister.)Now, usually I do this alone. In fact, the people who work there know me by name. It is usually very pleasant, a place where I can regroup and clear my head.

This particular Saturday, however, I was seated across from a group of 8 year old girls. I knew they were 8, because the loud mouth of the group proudly announced she had just celebrated her 8th birthday. They were wearing makeup. They were wearing cutting edge shoes and each of them had a designer handbag. Now, I'm all about people supporting designers and pumping much needed cashflow back into the economy. Duh, I write a fashion blog, c'mon. I am not, however, in favor of indulging little girls with such niceties when they are not even aware of the value of a dollar.

I found myself intrigued by their conversation, their banter, their language and lingo, the pre-teen speak of this new generation. Enamored by the purses they carried that I, at 27, could afford to buy, but wouldn't ALLOW myself to buy, I momentarily paused and wondered if one day, I would spoil my own daughters like that after I'd become wealthy. Would we go to spa days together? Would I give her $100 and tell her to treat her friends to a lovely little lunch at Nordies, on me?

As I heard the very obvious "leader" or "queen bee" of the group talk to her friends, monopolozing the conversation, I overheard her talking about things that I most definitely would never want my daughter to talk about. EVER. Things like oral sex, and a girl who "lost hers" this summer, because she "didn't think she could wait" and "her parents were away on a trip to Sedona." My jaw just about dropped. On her feet were Tory Burch sandals, the ones I've wanted to buy that cost close to $200. She was digging through the Louis Vuitton handbag I've been lusting over for quite some time, pulling out photos of her friends at their last 'party,' and talking about how so-and-so had smuggled in a bottle of Grey Goose in her oversized Balenciaga bag. W..T..F.

I started thinking back to the days of my innocence. Days when life was simple. I had to shop at less desirable places. Ladies days out with my Mom consisted of shopping at Target and Mervyn's and if you were LUCKY, you got to buy a top or pair of jeans at Dillard's, and that was an indulgence. I wore Old Navy flip flops in high school, and in junior high, my big sister and I begged our grandfather for his old flannel shirts so that we could work that whole grunge look. Everything was hand-me-downs and haircuts cost $10 and they were usually done in my hairdresser sister-in-law's kitchen. My friends and I didn't get money to go to Nordstrom Cafe for lunch, we were lucky to get Dilly Bars from Dairy Queen. We weren't having sex; damn, at 8 years old, I didn't even know what an orgasm was. Hell, I knew girls I went to ASU with who had never known what an orgasm was, much less what one felt like. Times were far less complicated, conversation much less, well, R-rated.

I thought about the Louis Vuitton speedy bag that rested on top of her table. The smart mouth little self-important bitch with her parent's credit cards and spoiled attitude may have had a bag that was the equivalent to 3 of my car payments. But what I had was so much better. I had experienced what it was like to be innocent. I had actually been a kid.

As I got up from the table, smoothed down my skirt (which I incidentally had purchased,on my own, with my hard-earned money, at Nordstrom) and stood up straight in my Diane von Furstenberg top, I looked down at my own handbag, the one I had worked my ass off to be able to purchase for myself, as a treat. Everything I had, I appreciated. I appreciated it, because I remember what it felt like to be a little girl with stars in her eyes, wanting pretty things, but knowing nobody, not Mom, not Dad, and most certainly, not a man, would buy them for me--I had to earn those things on my own.

As I threw on my Ray Bans, I glanced down my nose at the little girls, and they turned to look at me. I looked like, on the outside, a woman who had made it. They didn't know that I had ever struggled. The labels I wore covered the hard times I had gone through. They had no clue that I am a teacher, and that I live on a budget. They looked up to me for the wrong reasons; for what was on the outside. But inside this woman with a Fendi handbag is the little girl who worked for what she has, who had a childhood, and who never sold her soul to get to where she wanted to be. Maybe those girls looked up to me for the Prada and the DVF, but those are only names. MY NAME, and my integrity, is what defines me. And I got that integrity because, as a little girl, I was just raised right.

And in that instant, I knew that little girl with the Louis Vuitton bag? Her purse and wallet may have been full. But her life was really empty. She may have had the purse I was lusting after, and it may have cost her parents over a thousand dollars. But what I have, inside myself, is priceless.

And at the end of the day, I think that's better than anything money can buy.

She Works Hard for the Money...

As a teacher, going back to school doesn't just mean picking up school supplies for your students or decorating your classroom (although that's an expense in itelf, also.) It also includes buying yourself a fabulous new outfit for the first day, (and maybe a few for the days to follow, if you're anything like me.)

Ever the fashion plate, I try to keep in mind that as a teacher, I also make a pittance in comparison to women who work in the fashion industry in high powered careers. However, I don't believe one should ever have to sacrifice style in the name of your budget. I try to seek out deals on designer clothing and shoes wherever I can, but sometimes, it takes a very savvy, fashion pro to find such steals.

The past two years I bought Calvin Klein dresses to wear the first week of school. Now, most teachers out there are probably shaking their heads and wondering why I would do such a thing, because I don't make a fortune, but these were what I like to call "investment pieces." Calvin usually makes dresses that are very neutral, with clean lines and classic, tailored fits: clothing that makes you look like a modern day Audrey Hepburn while still being very contemporary and modern. At the same time, I always know exactly when a dress is going to hit the sale racks: I always have had a knack for this. Hey, some people can predict the weather, I can predict sales. What can I say, I didn't get to pick my talents, I was just born with them. Consider me blessed.

On that happy note, Nordstrom is having their Anniversary Sale storewide right now, and online, so, because I am a die-hard fan and an avid customer, I wait in anticipation for the opening day of this sale, and plan out my purchases accordingly. On one of my (read: several) trips to Nordie's during this sale, I found THE cutest Calvin Klein dress to wear to work, and you can even take it from day to night with the right shoes and accessories. Punch it up at night with a cute pair of red heels (and if you've got the money, honey, make those babies Jimmy Choo's.)It's office appropriate, party pretty, and hell, if someone happens to die, you can even wear it to a funeral. (Let's hope it's someone you never really liked, and not someone you loved.) The guarantee is, you WILL love this dress, and so many more items at Nordstrom's, the price can't be beat for Calvin Klein, and the other guarantee? You will look drop dead gorgeous while saving your hard earned money.

Service with a Smile

I just have to write a quick note to say that when I get great customer service, I remember it forever. I worked at Nordstrom in college and I will eternally remember the “tire” story that I heard my very first day on the job: a lady took tires back to Nordstrom, Nordies doesn’t sell tires, but they gave her the money back for the tires, anyway, to appease her, and she became a lifelong customer.

I’m a big fan of MAC cosmetics, and if you’ve read my blog, you know I mention MAC products quite often. But one of the things I love most is that when I walk into the MAC store at Scottsdale Fashion Square, the makeup artists are always so cordial, polite, and helpful. The same goes for the MAC counter at Dillards at San Tan Mall, especially Jenny, who is one of the most genuinely kindhearted people you’ll ever meet and who I used to work with when I worked as a makeup artist in college. She not only has a ton of product knowledge and experience, she’s funny and personable and makes your shopping experience top-notch.

You always remember kindness and thoughtfulness. And if you can carry out a bag with the perfect shade of eye shadow, that’s even better.
